What do you do when you know you are going to be stuck in the house for a day or so? Send an email message to your husband that day from work… ” Should have bought pork this weekend for sandwiches for the Middleborough Police, Fire, G&E and DPW… we could have cooked for them during the blizzard.”
Guess what? Our Humphrey’s Smoker was still going strong at 10am on Tuesday morning, Blizzard of 2015. After a trip to Restaurant Depot by Mic; Lowes, Stop & Shop, and Target by me on my way home; we got all the stuff needed to get this random act of kindness (RAoK) underway.
By 8pm Monday night, we had everything organized. The smoker was packed pretty well in our new Larger Charcoal Basket (that Mic got for Christmas) at the start of the smoke. The butts were trimmed and rubbed. Everything went without a hitch. I have to say, I am amazed at the performance of the Humphrey’s Smoker – we have the Pint. We’ve used it on many cooks – for both fun and competition, it’s been warm out, it’s been windy, it’s been chilly…. but this is our first blizzard cook. It’s outside, under the deck… overhead protected by the elements (sort-of, its a wood deck) but the wind and snow blows straight through – the door to the basement had a 2 foot snow drift when I went down at 7am (but had to shovel it away) and the smoker is 2 feet away from the door. It has not been protected, it’s getting pretty much the full storm.
Here’s the pork before pulled…
The final package to each of the four locations included about six pounds of pulled pork, a pint of homemade BBQ sauce, Mom’s recipe Cole Slaw, potato chips and rolls. We sure hope everyone enjoyed. A small “thank you” for all they do – blizzard or not!
