Harvard Fall Festival – this event is probably the most memorable one for us every year; it falls on a very special date for Mic and I…. and we found out two years ago, it’s really special for two of our best BBQ friends as well. It’s not only the very first New England BBQ Contest that Mic and I went to, it’s where it all began for us with BBQ – as Mic would say – “up here in New England”. We signed up at this event to become judges back in 2011. We never would have guessed that it would have turned into this! (at least I didn’t…)
But did I mention it is one of the most memorable events for us and our friends – Jared and Suzanne? Oh yeah, it typically falls on our anniversaries! Jared and Suzanne were married on the 12th and we were married on the 13th – so each year, we celebrate our anniversary at Harvard!
I can’t even begin to talk about what a great event this is… this year, last year, the year before and before…
Our very first time competing at this event was with The Bastey Boys and the one and only Emperor of BBQ, Andy King. We owe so much to Andy and his willingness to take us into his team and teach us so much. He is truly the real deal when you talk about BBQ, the friends and the family it is. There are no words to explain how lucky we were to meet him that hot, muggy day at Memphis in May – well, actually meet his lifelong friend Donna – but that is a story for another day! We love you, Andy! And Donna – we love you too!
But let’s focus on this year… (remind me to do a post about the previous years here too)
We decided to compete this year as Boo Boo Qued but only compete in the NEBS Categories. Harvard Fall Festival is the last of the season of events for the NEBS Team of the Year Awards (this year, next year that all changes) as well as a full NEBS event and KCBS event and multiple People’s Choice categories.
We kept it simple, we did the NEBS Competition and the People’s Choice on Saturday, Sunday we just hung out and attended the awards ceremonies.
Harvard has a great kids area, the People’s Choice, this year they added some demos and then they have a vendor fair. But by far the best part of the weekend is the BonFire… it is beyond amazing!
Oh and we even get fireworks each year for our anniversary – it’s so nice of them to do that for us!
But competing this year was so much fun! We had lots of friends join us and we had AMAZING fun neighbors – Smokin’ Bulldogs and JoePeanuts BBQ! We had such a fun weekend! Humphrey’s BBQ put on a great party and we hung out with some great teams!
Our friends Mike and Lalini cooked with us and Barbara and Frank spent the day helping and cooking and taking lots of pictures!
And if you search through the pictures below, you will see that our friend and sponsor, George Peters from KettlePizza even came in to bring some Deluxe Kits and hang out for a while with us!
We had a fairly good showing for our categories – 4th place Shrimp, 11th place Chicken, 2nd place BBQ Fatties and 6th place Dessert. The field was 17 teams and we finished 4th place overall! AND Mike’s Sausage Entry for People’s Choice placed 1st!!
Then on to the NEBS Team of the Year Awards. Our competitions this year put us in the categories for Rookie TOY, Tailgating TOY and the Ken Dakai Cup. We faired better than I could have ever hoped for…
1st Place Rookie TOY, 1st Place Tailgate TOY and 4th Place Overall Ken Dakai Cup!
And here are bunches of pictures from the weekend! Thanks to Barbara and Frank!
